New York Town To Hold Meeting To Gauge Public Interest In Casino Gambling

One town in New York is about to start discussions of whether or not it wants to be in consideration for a brand new casino. New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo recently said in a budget proposal that he wants to authorize three commercial casinos upstate — a move which goes in line with similar moves in the region.

The mayor of Lake George, New York, reportedly has scheduled a public forum for Tuesday to see what residents think about such a project coming to their neck of the woods.

Public officials in Saratoga Springs and Essex County reportedly have already expressed their respective interest in a casino resort. Rochester also reportedly is in the mix.

New York currently has many tribal casinos and racinos, but no full-scale, Las Vegas-style casino resort. Big time gambling firms and casino developers are hoping that one day a casino would be allowed in New York City, as that looks to be off the table at the present time. The governor is looking to increase tourism to other parts of the state.

The Empire State is home to 19.4 million people.

While New York looks to beef up its gambling industry, neighboring New Jersey has taken aggressive steps toward protecting what it already has. Atlantic City has been slumping since 2006, and lawmakers there legalized Internet gambling earlier this year.
